Taking

A city well
known for how much it rains, we haven't seen a drop for at least 10
days. To us Vancouverites that means we're having amazing weather. In
terms of gardening however, it's great to have sunlight but too much
of it isn't too good either. With the water sprinkling regulation (http://www.gvrd.bc.ca/water/sprinkling-regulations.htm)
it makes it a challenge to keep your lawn in good shape.
But as it gets hotter, the city needs more
water so this makes sense to try and conserve what we have. And besides,
the idea of watering our lawn is a pretty greedy one after all if you
think of how many people on this planet don't even have the minimal
supply of water.
I have mowed lawns for a long time. No,
I've never worked as a gardener but I have mowed many lawns in my time
and have started to enjoy it. My summer project this year is to make
our back yard into a breathtaking paradise. When people walk and see
our garden I want them to lose their words and just stand there and
admire it.
The lawn takes up a large part of most
gardens (unless the moss and weed portion has taken over) and therefore
it could be the focal point and also be part of the background in a
garden at the same time. Now, I'm no Gardenologist (no such word exists,
btw) but that's how I see the lawn. Its presence should be subtle yet
it takes up such a large space that you can't miss it.
Here are a few tips I've learned while
doing my own research.
a) Don't cut the grass blades too short, ideally only cut the top 1/3
b) Ideally you should cut the grass twice a week (yeah right) I try
to cut the lawn every 2 weeks
c) Take out any weeds and moss, and plant grass seed in areas that are
thin or dead
d) Most lawns should be fertilized around four times a year
Ok, there are probably man more and if
you have some that I MUST know then please send them to me! Mo2@Mo2Thinks.com
