The Will to Conserve Energy
Reward the Environment and Reward Yourself
By Mo2

The Concept of Energy Conservation
Simply put, energy conservation is reducing the energy output while achieving the same or similar effect. By achieving energy conservation, you help the environment and you also help yourself by reducing your electricity bill.

Global Warming?
I'm no scientist, but I don't need to be to realize that everything you do to conserve energy can help soften the damage that leads to global warming. I'll talk about some of many ways you can reduce your energy usage without affecting your way of life.

Lighting
If you're leaving a room for more than a reasonable amount of time say 30 seconds, turn the lights off. If it's a nice day out, open the curtains and let as much light as you can inside. When it's colder, this will actually save heating costs as well. You can also change your light bulbs to energy efficient bulbs. They cost a little more but they last ten times longer and use 75% less electricity.

Refrigerator
Make sure your fridge is closed! The obvious function of a fridge is that it maintains a certain temperature, which you can adjust, and if you keep the door open even by accident, you're just eating up more energy. Don't pack the fridge too full because it takes more energy to keep everything at a lower temperature. On the contrary, the less you can keep in your freezer the easier it is for the freezer to maintain the temperature. Cool eh?

Laundry
The biggest saver of energy is by using only cold water to wash your clothes. It takes energy to warm things up, that's why heating costs take up the largest part of your electricity bill. Another way to save energy is to reduce the number of times we use the washer/dryer. Instead of doing half a load wait until you have enough for a full load.

Don't Use it Just because you aren't paying for it
Just because you don't have to pay for hydro or electricity, as some don't when living in an apartment or shared house, doesn't mean you can keep everything on all the time. First, you'll have an unhappy landlord and you're also doing no good for the environment. Don't abuse what is given to you, besides if you keep that habit up, your rent will probably go up because the landlord will need that extra amount to pay for your usage. Moreover, if you keep up those habits, when the time comes for you to start paying for your own electricity, you'll regret having those habits.

Reward Yourself For Being Energy Efficient
When you begin being environment-friendly and actually start conserving energy, keep track of how much you are saving. Saving money and earning money are two different things. When you earn money you have cash in your hands, when you save money you don't see extra cash, you just pay less. This is one reason why people don't save as much.

When you start seeing a difference, start rewarding yourself by using a portion of the money saved for anything you want. Hey, you might finally be able to afford that 17-pound chocolate covered doughnut the corner grocery store is selling. (Yum...)

Mo2 Thinks
Despite writing this, I'm still guilty of not being completely energy efficient. My computer is on a lot because I do a lot of my work on my computer. Despite having it on sleep mode, that's still no excuse for not keeping it off while I'm doing other things. Our fridge is insanely packed and I'm sure we'd rank low on energy efficiency there too.

Although we can't see the different besides on the electricity bill, if every one of us actually tried to conserve even a little energy we could help our planet a lot. Let's make our world a better place to live, one flick of the switch at a time.
